„The displacement
glider hull has succesfully proven its advantages“
Venice, Italy – After one year of testing in waters around
Venice the company Alsphere has successfully proven advantages
of displacement glider (DG) boat, that because of its hull design
produces almost no waves. This effect brings several advantages:
lower fuel consumption, low wake and because of its unique keel
also additional deck space.
The patented system is based on the form of the boat consisting
of two elements: One of them is lower part, keel and second part
is gliding area, and both parts create their waves independently
on each other. To put it simply, they affect each other and in
an optimal case they annul each other.
The tests of DG boat in waters around Venice have shown substantially
smaller total resistance when travelling through water at all
speeds compared with conventional boats and also substantially
lower total resistance when travelling through water compared
with conventional gliding boats or hydroplanes in the speed range
before hydroplaning. Hull provides advantage of up to 30 percent
less fuel consumption to comparable displacement boats. As an
American naval architect commented “the boat brings more
speed with less horse power”. And that enables reduced investment
in boat engines.
DG boat forms virtually no wave when travelling through the water
enables better protection of bank and buildings on water. Because
of its low wake Italian Company Actv spa (Venice public Transport
Company that operates vaporettos and other public transport) has
taken DG boat to consideration for usage in public transport in
Venetian lagoon.
Since keel is wider, you can fit motor, fuel, water tank and sewage
inside and get flat deck from stern to bow. That advantage can
enable mainly trawler boats to increase living space on boats
for up to 25 percent. The DG boat has shown that trawler boats
with improved hull design could increase their autonomy range
for up to 30 percent with the same sized fuel tanks.
The company Alsphere with its DG boat is not going to compete
with established boat producers with its own line of boat, but
is going to offer patented hull design under license basis to
improve hulls of their existing or new boat lines.
The hull has been granted patent in US and Japan, patent in EU
is pending.
